Tale Talk Weekly – 16 July

‘Watch the swings, Tommy! I’m sorry, he’s a little over excited, today. Excuse me, Tommy! Mind the swings, oh for crying out loud, look where you’re going. Tommy, come over here, son. Now, Tommy!’ The father rushes after his son as he falls onto the concrete playground.

The young child lays still for a brief moment then the world opens out into a wail of a scream which crescendos into a belting screech,

‘Waaaa-aaaaaaaa-aaaarrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhh.’

His father gently brushes his hair to one side as he kneels beside him and coaxes him with, ‘It’s okay, son, you’ll be fine, Tommy, let me see where you’ve hurt yourself. Okay, let’s have a look. It’s okay.’ The father gently takes his hand and tries to get his son to lift himself up from off the ground,

‘There, that wasn’t too difficult now was it, Tommy, you’ll be fine.’ He smiles and brushes the tears away from his son’s face as he nudges his thumb against his cheek, where the tears had formed a shiny patch mixed with the dirt from the ground.

The boy gets up and leans against his father, barely able to stand up properly. A child swings on the turntable swing, nearby, saying, ‘Watch me! Watch me mummy, look! Wheeeeeeeeehhh!’

A voice behind me says, ‘Careful, Sandra, hold on tight to the bars, okay, sweetheart?’

‘Mummy are we going to get some ice cream soon, mummy?’ asks the girl on the turntable swing.

‘Only if you’re a good girl, sweetheart.’ She answers from a short distance away, smiling as she looks at her daughter with that ‘you’re my treasure’ gaze as she holds her hand out in case her ‘sweetheart’ falls and she’s there ready to prevent anything happening to her. No, that look says, no one is ever going to hurt her beautiful daughter, not even her daddy.

‘I am mummy, look at meeeeeeeee!’ The young girl shouts out, as she smiles at her mother and spins around on the turntable swing whilst her mother stands on guard by her side.

‘Over here, Keith, pass it here,’ a voice says in the distance as he runs towards his team mate who kicks the ball in his direction as it lifts off the ground and over to the other who plunges forward to header it towards the goal.

‘Go on Keith, get it in there, go on! Go on!’ Said his team mate as he watches him header the ball against the post and utters a rasping ‘Aoohhrrrrrhhh’ as it bounces off the thin edge and onto the back of the post, behind the net.

‘What did you go and do that for?’ he shouted out to his team mate who falls vertically onto his knees and cups his head in sheer agony.

‘Come on boys, fifteen minutes to times up. Get your heads in gear, team and go get them. Show them who’s the winning team, go on lads, get them and give them all you got’ Comes the resounding words from their sports teacher. ‘You’re not going to get far if you keep hitting the pole, now will you, KEITH?’ He continues and darts a fleeting look at Keith whilst trying to shield his other eye from the searing glare of the sun, beating down on them, without a hint of letting up.

I decided there and then I’d head back home from my morning jog around the park as the sun had got much too hot for comfort.

Tale Talk Weekly – 12 July

It never rains but it pours.

Got that feeling the world’s gone stark raving, hyper doo lally?

Tennis courts are almost empty all year round – clay, hard, grass courts remain virtually empty except for Sunday mornings. The crisp, white shorts glimmer in the morning light, on Sundays. Trainers, skid against hard court surfaces bright and early, Sunday mornings.

‘Yeah, Raj___ is planning on getting the accounts ready for Monday morning.’

‘When Harj___ is back?’

‘Yeah, should be done first thing though. Rashi___ should be there too.’

ADJACENT COURT.

‘I’m not paying for any more lessons until you start winning, Yvon__, I want to see your ranking go up…I’m not paying all this money and not see your rankings going up, do you hear me, Yvon__?!’

No reply.

‘I’m not paying for your lessons any more, until I see you get some results. Why should I bother if you don’t care? Why? Do you think I’m going to pay for any more lessons? Well, you’d be wrong there. I won’t pay for any more lessons and that was a bad serve. You’re not even serving properly. I’m not paying for any more lessons until I see you getting the scores. Not paying.’

Game.

‘I don’t see the results I want to see. Until you get your act together, I’m going to cancel your lessons. I can’t pay for these lessons any more, Yvon__ and you’ve just missed a ball. What’s wrong with you?!! What is wrong with YOU?’

Set.

‘Your coach said to me yesterday that you’re slipping. Do you hear me, girl? Slipping. I’m not taking you up there anymore. Your lessons are finished, finished I say and look, you missed that easy pass. If you’re not prepared to put in the effort, I’m not paying anymore, do you hear me?! I won’t break my back, paying for those lessons until I see you pulling your socks up, I said, pull your socks up, Yvon__ and that’s how it’s staying. Make an effort, girl. Why do you think I work these extra hours for? So that you can run around the court and hit the ball for fun? What do you think I do all week? Sit around and work for FUN? Girl, you’re something else, do you know that? Something else.'

Match.

Any one see the racket?

Tale Talk Weekly – 7 July

Advantage, all.

The quarter-finals ….

The semi-finals ….

The finals …

Been looking at some poems recently and thought I’d post this one:

Tennis for History?

Wimbledon I watched religiously
got the names ready to root for

And to get the racket out for
in June when the exams
called for concentration
not deuce or love-whatever

The Historical fact is
History and Tennis went
together at my school
The teacher being a great
sportsman, Head of History
and a Great person,

Anyone for Tennis?
Virginia Wade's moment of Glory?

Well the sports did well
So did
Wimbledon
so did our
History lesson
in sports.

'Let the Game Commence.'
That, was a Successful Topic in Advanced History.
Earning 3 sets to love.
